Family Promise
St. John's has been involved with Family Promise of Lubbock
since the program's inception in 1998. Volunteers from local
churches host homeless families as their guests for meals and to
stay overnight in rooms at the church buildings. Our coordinator
works with volunteers from the congregation to fill the many
associated duties about every 12 weeks or so. To accomplish the
mission of Family Proise, many volunteers are needed each time the
church hosts.
The mission of Family Promise is to * keep children from having
to live on the streets. * keep families together while the parents
work and save money to be able to have a place of their own. *
provide a secure, home-like, family environment for children and
their parents temporarily to allow parents the opportunity to get
jobs, save money and find affordable housing for the family.
Almost 40 percent of all homeless individuals are families with
children. Because these children miss school, medical appointments
and other important experiences, their development is slower than
that of other children who live in a stable family environment.
Their parents also have fewer opportunities for good jobs and
education. LIHN offers a home-like, family environment with
comprehensive, individualized services to address family needs. The
Family Promise counselor works closely with the children's schools
and with many other private and public community resources to help
the family become independent in a place of their own.
